10th ANNUAL AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION WALK TO BE HELD
AT KAPIOLANI PARK ON MARCH 21

More than 4,000 walkers expected to help raise funds

Honolulu — This year marks the 10th anniversary of the American Diabetes Association’s walk in Hawaii.  This year the  “Step Out Walk to Fight to Diabetes” event is expected to draw 4,000 walkers to Kapiolani Park on March 21 for a morning of casual exercise, free entertainment, keiki activities, health education and prize giveaways.  The fun-filled event raises much needed funds to support Hawaii’s programs and services, public education and advocacy,  and research for a cure.

Walk Corporate Chair Arthur A. Ushijima, president and CEO of the Queen’s Health Systems said, “This event is far more than a fundraising walk. It is a wonderful opportunity for our friends, family and co-workers to come together, enjoy each other’s company and make a significant difference in the fight against diabetes for those in our community challenged by the disease.”

According to recent statistics more that 10 percent of Hawaii’s population suffer from diabetes and the complications created by the disease. People diagnosed with pre-diabetes are often encouraged to maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise to help prevent and manage the disease.

Majken Mechling, Executive Director of the American Diabetes Association Hawaii chapter, said, “The goal of the Walk is to show people that small steps can bring big rewards in preventing diabetes or helping to manage diabetes. Taking charge of your health can be as easy and fun as a walk around the park.”

Last year’s walk attracted over 3,000 residents and dozens of corporate sponsors, raising $460,000 for diabetes education, prevention, and research. This year the Walk goal is to raise more than $500,000 from individual donations and business sponsorships. More than 75 companies have donated and many are continuing to form Walk teams.

For the past several years, Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann has been the honorary chairman of the event, bringing together a large group of walkers, and as always has raised funds to support the event.  “Many of us have been touched by this disease, if not a parent or sibling, perhaps a friend or co-worker.  People in our communities don’t have to suffer alone.  Through the support of the American Diabetes Association in Hawaii people can get the help they need to learn to manage the disease.  That is why we continue our support annually.”

The Walk registration kicks off at 7:00 a.m. with warm up exercises at 7:45 a.m. and the Walk starts at 8:00 a.m. To register, call the American Diabetes Association in Hawaii at 947-5979 or visit http://stepout.diabetes.org and register online.

HONOLULU - The forecast for Friday, December 5, 2008 calls for “snow.”  “Snow” is expected to fall on the grounds of Central Union Preschool located at 1660 South Beretania Street between the hours of 8:45am and 10:35am.  The “snow” is really fifteen tons of finely chopped ice (acquired from Pacific Ocean Producers) but to these Hawaii preschoolers, it’s snow.

The children, dressed in colorful winter attire, will build snowmen, make snow angels and even participate in throwing snowballs at a few of their teachers or parents.  A visit from the Hawaiian Santa will also grace the classrooms throughout the morning.

The “snow” is once again being delivered to the school through a generous transportation donation from Unitek Solvent, who has kindly offered their services to the school for five years in a row!

At least 50 parent volunteers will be on hand to assist the preschoolers as they partake in this winter activity.  Coffee will help keep our volunteers energized thanks to the generosity of Coffee Talk, Hawaii’s cozy spot to get gourmet coffee blends, teas, fresh baked goods, and light entrees in Kaimuki.

WHO:              Raw on Request, local distributors of Primal Pet Food

WHAT:            Informational talk about feeding pets a raw food diet

WHERE:         55 Pawsh Place, Halekuai Shopping Center (Kapolei), 563 Farrington Highway, anchored by Chevron and Starbucks

WHEN:            Saturday, November 22 and Saturday, November 29, 1:30-2:00 p.m. (company representative will be available to answer questions until 3:30 p.m.)

Honolulu – Raw on Request, a locally-owned dog food distribution company started by two local former Aloha Airlines flight attendants, will be giving an informational talk on how to utilize a raw diet to promote the health and well-being of pets.

“The theory behind feeding raw food diet is to provide nutrition that is biologically appropriate or species-specific; essentially what a dog would eat in the wild,” said co-owner Sharon Rahe.

Because dogs are designated the same species as wolves (canis lupus), their natural diet would likely include small prey animals caught and eaten raw. Their gastrointestinal system is highly acidic (pH 1), so it is capable of dissolving meat and bone and is highly resistant to food-borne bacteria such as salmonella and e.coli.

A raw food diet is more suited to dogs. Currently, one of the primary ingredients in many commercially produced dry dog foods is grain such as rice, corn, etc. These ingredients, although healthy for people and other species, are not readily assimilated in a dog’s digestive system.

Sharon Rahe and Sandra Sue, the co-owners of Raw on Request, began importing the raw-diet dog food for their own pets after both of their dogs suffered from various health ailments.

“Because our dogs were struggling, we began researching options and learned a lot about the health benefits of a raw food diet,” said co-owner Sandra Sue. “We both noticed a significant change in the health and well-being of our dogs after a few weeks of a raw food diet and we were sold.”

Raw on Request is the original distributor for Primal Pet Foods, Inc. in Hawaii.   Primal Pet Foods, Inc. procures its protein sources and vegetables from small farms that promote sustainable agriculture and humane methods to create its raw, fresh-frozen food. The food contains no preservatives, colors, fillers, grains, flavorings or chemicals and lasts up to one year in the freezer or three to four days in the refrigerator.

55 Pawsh Place is one of several locations that feature the Primal Pet Foods. For a complete list of locations visit www.RawonRequest.com

THE AMERICAN DIABETES ASSCIATION PROVIDES NEW COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAM TO EDUCATE CHURCH GOERS

Participating churches offer health education to members through “Diabetes Sundays”

Honolulu— The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is now reaching out to members of the community through its newest initiative called “Diabetes Sundays: Eat Healthy, Live Healthy”, funded in part by HMSA. The community-based program brings health education to the public, with emphasis on reaching underserved populations at risk right in their own neighborhood.

“We felt that Churches represent, much more that just a place to worship, but a place to gather and share information that helps people to live the best life possible,” said American Diabetes Association Executive Director Majken Mechling. “Many people believe that maintaining balance in life requires spiritual, mental and physical components and we wanted to bring our resources to benefit congregations that want to educate their members on living healthier through proper diet and nutrition.”

“With over 110,000 people living with diabetes in Hawaii, we all know someone living with diabetes and its complications,” she continued.

The new education and prevention program brings the latest facts and myths about the signs and symptoms of diabetes, complications, how to live with the disease, and how to prevent diabetes. This is done through a two pronged approach.
First, a Certified Diabetes Educator, physician, nutritionist or dietician makes a presentation to the congregation after the regular service. Then following the presentation a mini health fair is held on the grounds of the church. Church members can learn more about whether they are at risk for diabetes and what they can do to minimize the risk. The fair includes opportunities for diabetes screenings, eye exams, blood pressure and kidney checks, cooking demonstrations and more.

Resources are provided congregations members living with diabetes to assist them with developing strategies to manage the disease. Each presentation and fair is tailored to meet the needs of the specific community in which the church resides as well as the members of the church. The goal of Diabetes Sundays is to create greater awareness of the impact of diabetes and provide communities with strategies to reverse the growing trend of a steadily increasing risk of diabetes in all age groups.
“With so many in Hawaii affected by diabetes we all need to work together to prevent this disease and create a healthier environment for all of us to live in,” said Majken. “This can only be accomplished through educating as many people as possible about the risks and strategies for prevention.”

RAW ON REQUEST PROMOTES NEW DIET FOR MAN’S BEST FRIEND

Honolulu – Raw on Request, a locally owned dog food distribution company started by two local former flight attendants, is promoting a new raw dog food diet to improve the health of man’s best friend.

Sharon Rahe and Sandra Sue, the co-owners of Raw on Request, began importing the healthier dog food for their own pets from Primal Pet Foods in San Francisco, after both of their dogs suffered from severe health problems.  One was the victim of old age and the other had severe food allergies.

“Because our dogs were struggling with different ailments, we began researching options and learned a lot about the health benefits of a raw food diet,” said Sue. “We both noticed a significant change in the health and well-being of our dogs after a few weeks and we were sold.”

The theory behind feeding raw dog food is to provide nutrition that is biologically appropriate or species-specific; essentially what a dog would eat in the wild. Because dogs are designated the same species as wolves (canis lupus), their natural diet would likely include small prey animals caught and eaten raw.

By eating small prey in the wild, dogs receive essential nutrients in the form of bone, muscle meat and a small amount of predigested (stomach contents) vegetable matter. Because a dog’s gastrointestinal system, similar to wolves', is highly acidic (pH 1), it is capable of dissolving meat and bone and is highly resistant to food-borne bacteria such as salmonella and e.coli.

Currently, one of the primary ingredients in many commercially produced dry dog foods is grain such as rice, corn, etc. These ingredients, although healthy for people and other species, are not readily assimilated in a dog’s digestive system and therefore can take up to 15 hours for proper digestion.

On the other hand, raw food is easily digested within 4-6 hours, thereby avoiding putrefaction, which may cause bloating (gastric torsion) or other gastrointestinal problems.

Raw on Request is the exclusive distributor for Primal Pet Foods, Inc. in Hawaii and imports its raw, fresh-frozen, complete dog food meals from a company that procures its protein sources and vegetables from small farms that promote sustainable agriculture and humane methods.

"The emphasis is on quality control and using suppliers that can maintain that high standard,” Rahe said.  “For instance, Primal uses meats supplied from farms that use only vegetarian feed and insists on not treating livestock with growth hormones or medications/antibiotics.  Their commitment is to start with top quality ingredients to promote optimal health and wellness for your pets."

The food contains no preservatives, colors, fillers, grains, flavorings or chemicals and lasts up to one year in the freezer or three to four days in the refrigerator. It is available from local pet stores in two sizes, 4lb. bag or 8lb bag, which flavors include:  chicken, duck, beef, lamb, pheasant and venison.  Also available is chicken necks 5lb., buffalo and beef 2" marrow bones.  The stores also carry cat food in the 4lb size in flavor combos of chicken / salmon, beef /salmon, or venison.

“We wanted to give Hawaii pet owners the opportunity to experience the benefits of high-quality raw dog food – a trend that has steadily been moving across the US,” said Rahe. “We have seen remarkable changes in our own dogs and hope others will get to see the difference too when they try the raw food diet for their own pets.”

The most commonly cited benefits of feeding biologically appropriate raw foods (or bones and raw food) are:

•    Cleaner teeth and naturally fresher breath
•    Increased vitality and energy levels
•    Shiny, soft coats with less "doggy smell"
•    Clean ears--no more yeasty build-up
•    Reduced stool volume and odor (the food is more bioavailable, therefore waste is less)
•    Reduced arthritic symptoms
•    Improved digestion (live enzymes in raw food)
•    Improvements in conditions like hot spots, ear infections, and flaky skin
•    Less attractive to fleas and other parasites
•    Boosted immune system
•    Reduction in allergic reactions to food -- dogs who show sensitivities to certain types of meat based kibbles often do not have the same reaction to the same meat in it's natural, raw state.

Current retailers of Primal Pet Foods, Inc. include: Naturally Pet, Crazy Canine, Kapalama Pet Hospital, Bark Avenue and Jamie Cahill, distributor/retailer in Maui. For more information email sharon.rawonrequest@gmail.com or visit www.rawonrequest.com.

TEEN SUMMER READING PROGRAM FEATURES LOCAL ARTISTS AND CREATORS OF NEMU-NEMU

Audra Furuichi and Scott Yoshinaga give visual demonstration on the creation of a webcomic

HONOLULU
– Local artists Audra Furuichi and Scott Yoshinaga will spend the summer presenting the basics of webcomic creation at libraries throughout Oahu as part of the Hawaii State Public Library Teen Summer reading program sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawaii and the National Football League Charities.

“The Hawaii State Public Library System is delighted to showcase nemu-nemu creators Audra Furuichi and Scott Yoshinaga as our featured Teen Summer Reading Program artists, ” said Susan Nakata, Library Development Services Section Manager. “Their program on webcomic creation is a perfect tie-in with our ‘iRead’ theme, which highlights teen books on imagination, innovation, and ingenuity.”

The 2008 Teen Summer Reading Program strives to encourage young readers to pick up books during their summer break and read.  The program is conducted in 51 public libraries statewide, and teens between 7th and 12th grade are invited to participate in the reading campaign and visit their local library weekly.  By reading one book per week, teens are given a free reading incentive, while supplies last.  (See below schedule of presentations.)

Furuichi and Yoshinaga are the creators of nemu-nemu (pronounced “Neh-moo”), the webcomic chronicling the adventures of two young girls – Anise Kurobu and Kana Mezurashi – and their two live “stuffed toy” pups as they explore the world around them. The comic debuted online on April 1, 2006, in a 4-panel cartoon style and has continued to expand its fan base across geographical boundaries.

“We feel very fortunate to be able to participate in the libraries program,” said Furuichi. “We are firm believers in the importance of education and the value of reading.  We also want young people to know that they can achieve their dreams through hard work and perserverance.”

Both Furuichi and Yoshinaga have worked for the past 2 years to create the online comic that appears every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at www.nemu-nemu.com and monthly in the East Oahu Newspaper.  They also have debuted two printed volumes of their work which is sold at various stores on Oahu and online.

Throughout the year both artists also volunteer time to give demonstrations to students in high schools throughout the state.  For more information about the Teen Summer Reading Program visit www.librarieshawaii.org.  For more information about nemu-nemu.com visit www.nemu-nemu.com.

Locally produced webcomic continues to grow its fan base

HONOLULU – nemu*nemu (pronounced “Neh-moo”), the webcomic chronicling the lives of two young girls – Anise Kurobu and Kana Mezurashi – and their two live “stuffed toy” pups, is celebrating its second anniversary. Created by local artists Audra Furuichi and Scott Yoshinaga, the comic debuted online on April 1, 2006, in a 4-panel cartoon style and has since developed an ever-growing fan base following the follies of nemu*nemu.

“It’s hard to believe we’ve already published the webcomic for 2 years,” said Furuichi. “We are so pleased by the reaction to the comic and that so many enjoy the style and conte nt of our strip. We are extremely grateful to the fans and those who have supported us in producing nemu*nemu.”

In conjunction with its second anniversary, KimonoKitsy Studios – the company owned by Furuichi and Yoshinaga that produces nemu*nemu – is on the verge of releasing its second book, nemu*nemu, volume 2. Volume 1 which was released a year ago helped to increase the fan base of readers and sold over 700 copies.

Originally, KimonoKitsy Studios planned to only publish their webcomic online, but after numerous fan requests a decision was made to print nemu*nemu, volume 1. Volume 1 is a compilation of the first 12 chapters of the adventures of Anise and Kana and their two stuffed pups as they explore the world and learn about life. Their style is "anime-influenced", infused with island style culture and humor.

“A webcomic is much different from syndication because it goes everywhere and anywhere the Internet goes, as a result we have fans all over the world, but people still ask us for printed books,” said Yoshinaga. “Volume 1 was such a big hit that we immediately began to plan for Volume 2. It's just a natural progression.”

In addition to updating their comic every Monday, Wednesday and Friday online, an exclusive nemu*nemu comic is also printed each month in the East Oahu Sun newspaper. The new nemu*nemu book will debut at Kawaii-Kon anime convention at the Hawaii Convention Center on April 18, 2008. It will also be on sale at Collector Maniacs in Kaimuki.  Additional nemu*nemu merchandise, like plushies, t-shirts, handmade hats and other collectibles, can be found on the nemu*nemu website at www.nemu-nemu.com.

About the Artists

Hawai'i born artists, Audra Furuichi and Scott Yoshinaga, are graduates of the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. Coincidentally, both contributed comic strips to the University’s student newspaper, Ka Leo o Hawai'i. Schulz personally chose Furuichi’s strip for the prestigious 1999 Scripps-Howard Charles M. Schulz College Cartooning Award. Furuichi continued to work in comics while living in California as a colorist for Marvel and Antarctic Press and translation editor for Studio ICE/Ice Kunion. Yoshinaga is a Technology Coordinator for Mid-Pacific Institute Elementary School by day and collaborates with Furuichi at night. He assists in writing, lettering and managing the nemu*nemu website.

KAILUA, HI, OAHU – Morning Brew, a locally-owned coffee house located in Kailua, is reopening their doors to patrons after a renovation that has allowed them to increase square footage, update the look and feel of their shop and provide new offerings to customers. Husband and wife owners Peter and Debbie Anderson shared a dream over 13 years ago to create a café with a unique, friendly and fun atmosphere inspired by some of the cafés they experienced during their travels together.

“We wanted to create something special in Hawaii, a place where people could come together and feel at home,” said co-owner Peter Anderson. “We believe in quality products, but even more so, in quality people. We believe our people are one of the keys to our success.”

Since 1995, when Morning Brew first opened its doors in Kailua, it has continued to develop a loyal base of customers that come for more than just the coffee. Patrons can enjoy breakfast or lunch in addition to the coffee-house-industry standards of muffins, breads and bagels, as well as other not-so-standard custom pastry offerings. Now with the expansion of their operations they will be offering even more enticing items including an evening menu of tapas and also the addition of beer and wine service. They also plan to have performances by local entertainers as well as continuing to feature the work of local artists at the café.

“We grew up here so we believe in the culture of supporting each other,” said Debbie Anderson. “It’s one of the things that make Hawaii such a special place to live and work and we feel good about expanding our local operations to better serve our customers.”

Peter and Debbie have known each other since they were 14 years old. Both graduated from Punahou before moving to the mainland to purse college degrees. Peter received his degree in English from San Diego State University while Debbie received a degree in Journalism and Advertising from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Debbie also received a degree from UCLA in interior design.

The Andersons began their coffee adventure together in the summer of 1994 on the slopes of Diamond Head through a coffee cart known as “Krakatoa Café.” After honing their skills among the nearby customers from the Kapiolani Community College and Diamond Head theatre the couple seized the opportunity to expand into a permanent retail space in Kailua town in 1995. Since 1995, Morning Brew has become a staple of the Kailua shopping center with a steady base of regulars and new customers and the rest they say “is history.”

Morning Brew is located at 600 Kailua Road #120 in Kailua Shopping Center and is open Sunday thru Thursday 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. For more information visit www.morningbrewhawaii.com or call 262-7770.

The forecast for Tuesday, December 11, 2007 calls for “snow.”  That’s right, you read this advisory correctly.  “Snow” will fall on the grounds of Central Union Preschool located at 1660 South Beretania Street between the hours of 8:45am and 10:35am.  The “snow” is really fifteen tons of finely chopped ice (acquired from Pacific Ocean Producers) but to these Hawaii preschoolers, it’s snow.  The children will be colorfully dressed for the occasion with many in snowsuits, winter jackets, and of course mittens and snow caps.  The “snow” will be delivered to the school through a generous transportation donation from Unitek Solvent, who has kindly offered their services to the school for four years in a row!

At least 50 parent volunteers will be on hand to assist the preschoolers as they partake in this winter activity.  Coffee will help keep our volunteers energized thanks to the generosity of Coffee Talk, Hawaii’s cozy spot to get gourmet coffee blends, teas, fresh baked goods, and light entrees.
